Identification_Information: Citation: Citation_Information: Originator: Kansas Department of Health and Environment and U.S. Geological Survey Publication_Date: 20121001 Title: Bureau of Water, Stream and Lake Monitoring Sites Geospatial_Data_Presentation_Form: vector digital data Description: Abstract: The Kansas Department of Health and Environment - Bureau of Environmental Field Services and Bureau of Water is responsible for monitoring water quality conditions in streams and publicly owned lakes and wetlands throughout Kansas. This Section also tracks environmental contaminant levels in fish and other aquatic life and performs special water pollution investigations in cooperation with the KDHE district offices and other governmental agencies. Information obtained through these efforts is applied in the development of the state's biennial water quality assessment and list of water quality-limited surface waters Integrated Water Quality Assessment report. Water quality data also are applied in the formulation of total maximum daily loads (TMDLs) for 303(d)-listed water bodies; in the derivation of permit limits for discharging wastewater treatment facilities; and in the development of aquatic recreational advisories and fish tissue consumption advisories. Purpose: Monitoring sites are designed to meet the environmental surveillance and reporting requirements of the Clean Water Act and other applicable federal and state laws. The Kansas Surface Water Register spatial dataset is provided to the public as a portion of the Kansas Open Records Act (KORA). The Stream Chemistry Monitoring Program is the largest and longest running environmental monitoring operation administered by the Technical Services Section. Water samples are regularly obtained from streams throughout Kansas and analyzed for a suite of physical, organic, inorganic, radionuclide, and bacteriological parameters. The program's database currently comprises about two million analytical records representing nearly 400 active and inactive monitoring locations and more than 100 physicochemical and microbiological parameters. For a complete list of parameters, see the Program’s Quality Assurance Management Plan. For further information on the creation of the NHD, please refer to the entire NHD metadata. The metadata could be accessed at http://gisdasc.kgs.ku.edu/. Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: NHD1 Process_Date: 2001 Process_Step: Process_Description: Utilizing the National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) as a base map, the NHD was clipped at the Kansas State boundary so to include only those streams that fall within Kansas's jurisdiction. (If further extent of hydrology is needed, please refer to the contact information.) A CUSEGA field was added to the NHD database. The CUSEGA field is the unique identifier that will allow the NHD to be spatially joined with the Kansas Surface Water Register. The CUSEGA field is the HUC 8 Cataloging Unit combined with the SEGment number of the stream. The CUSEGA is the primary cataloging unit for all correspondence with each individual stream segment. Each year, the Kansas Legislature and EPA approves of any changes to the Kansas Surface Water Register. These changes are then transferred to this copy of the NHD. Attribute fields from the original NHD have also been removed. This copy of the NHD only includes the most commonly used attributes in the NHD for ease of use. Source_Used_Citation_Abbreviation: NHD1, USGS, KGS Process_Date: 08/01/2005 Process_Step: Process_Description: Errors have be found in the original NHD due to technology constraints at the time the NHD was digitized. A majority of the changes are segment start and ending points occurring on double sided streams. Some stream rerouting has also occurred since the publication of the NHD. Stream rerouting has caused HUC changes and CUSEGA changes. These changes have been corrected in this copy of the NHD currently used by KDHE. For specific areas of changes, contact KDHE- Bureau of Environmental Field Services.
