The databases are evaluated based on questions similar to the following: Does the database's documentation properly explain the dataset? Does the data import properly into its native dataset environment? Is consistent methodology used throughout the data? Are all of the database's fields and values legitimate compared to the documentation? Is the database's topology free of errors that could impair the functionality of the data? Once the data is tested a report is written describing the evaluation. A copy of the report is then forwarded to the data originator for his/her review. If errors are found, the data originator is expected to make any necessary corrections and then provide those corrected coverages. After these steps have been taken data is considered archivable and made available for distribution. Data that is archived by DASC has been tested and corrected. Source_Time_Period_of_Content: Time_Period_Information: Single_Date/Time: Calendar_Date: 1998 Source_Currentness_Reference: publication date Source_Citation_Abbreviation: BCD Source_Contribution: spatial and attribute information Process_Step: Process_Description: Database was created by downloading, to an ASCII text file, the relevant records from the Biological and Conservation Database (BCD) of the Kansas Natural Heritage Inventory, Kansas Biological Survey. This database contains records originally derived from field surveys, literature, Kansas museum records, and other sources. Following download, the text file was edited to add a primary key, then split into two files: one containing only the geographic coordinates and the key, the second containing the attribute fields and the key. The coordinate file was processed with an Arc Macro Language routine to convert coordinates from degree, minute, second notation to decimal degrees, and to format the file for use with the 'generate' function of Arc/Info which was used to create a point coverage. During the conversion process, some records were found to be missing latitude and/or longitude values. These records were verified against the BCD and original field records and maps and either corrected or discarded. The attribute file was manipulated with the Microsoft Access software package to format it for use in Arc/Info and to check for invalid or out range entries (note: this formatting included the removable of apostrophes included in the common names of many species). Questionable records were verified against the BCD and original field records, and corrected as needed in the attribute file. The attribute file was divided into three files: one each for plant, animal, and community records. Three empty attribute tables were created using the 'Tables' module of Arc/Info, then data was added to each from the appropriate attribute text file. Three copies of the point coverage were created and each was joined with either the animal, community, or plant attribute table created in the previous step, using the primary key to relate point locations and attribute records. The 'ArcEdit' module was used to select and delete points in each coverage which had no attribute records after the relate (e.g. to delete all the animal locations from the plant coverage). To protect the location of sensitive species and community types, a procedure was developed to create buffers which are randomly located around the true point locations. The buffers were created with the 'regionbuffer' command and were sized so that the true point location is always contained somewhere within the buffer. Exact locations can be requested from the Kansas Biological Survey, Lawrence, KS. The common names of plant and animal species and community types were used as the grouping item in the regionbuffer procedure. The result is a region/polygon coverage with a single subclass (named 'sub') containing a separate region for each species.
